Thursday 4th July – Bike ***** Felixstowe to Levington Marina – sunny
and warm:)
After a quick visit to the nurse at our local surgery to remove a blood
pressure monitor I had been wearing for 24 hours and getting the thumbs up
I returned home to pump up the tyres on the mountain bikes as we had
arranged to meet up with our friends Linda and Neil Hurrell for a bike
ride. With picnic packed we left home just after eleven heading down to the
prom in wall to wall sunshine which was much better than the forecast
cloudy day:) At the old windsurfing club end of the prom we turned right to
Peewit caravan site to meet the Hurrells in their lovely new caravan and
sat on the deck for a cuppa. Then we set off for Trimley Marshes through
the very busy Felixstowe Docks, across the railway crossing near gate two
and out into the country. Stopping at the dock view point to watch the
container action we then carried on along the long bumpy lane to the River
Orwell. With the tide nearing high Neil and I biked along the sea wall
while Linda and Mag chose the easier lower route ending up at the Winter
Flood bird hide for lunch and watch the bird action. We were not
disappointed as there were loads of Avocets, Godwits in full ginger
colouring, Lapwings, Shell Ducks, Geese, Gulls, Red Shanks, Egrets and
Herons. So, after an entertaining hour we continued along the sea wall with
stunning blue skies with lovely wispy clouds spotting a Marsh Harrier and a
couple of Deer. Past the spooky dead trees in the creek we stopped at the
seat overlooking Levington Bay, one of the best views in Suffolk before
continuing past Loompit Lack to Levington Marina to meet up with Neil and
Linda’s Grandson who was coming to Felixstowe to stay at the caravan. We
stopped by the marina and had an ice cream and I even bought a cheap bush
hat to replace the one I lost while windsurfing to Woodbridge on Sunday.
Refreshed we set off for home along our favourite tree lines route coming
out at Trimley. Then a quick stop at Morrisons before splitting up to go to
our homes. What a top day making the most of the sunny warm day and light
winds which seem to be there for several days to come meaning the
windsurfers being replaced by the bikes. We were out nearly 6 hours
covering 14 miles, easily 5-star day:)
